What a weekend we have coming up! Thursday from 6:30 to 8:00 at the bot garden, "Bubba, Tank, and Bleed" serve up the jazz to go along with wine from the Five Points Bottle Shop, eats from Trumps Catering, and much more. $25 for non-members. $20 for members. Call 706 542 1244.
Friday's amazing. Athens songbird Royce Anne Waldorf, whose voice has been missed in these parts, returns to the stage at Alibi -- first set around 6:00 -- backed by an ensemble that includes the extraordinary Kevin Hyde. Then at 8:30 or so, our crazy good New Orleans style group -- the Half Dozen Brass Band -- cranks it up on the Melting Point stage ($8 in advance; $12 at the door) in a benefit for Family Counseling. After that, at around 10 p.m., Melvin Mathurin and his quartet showcase their prowess from bebop to ballads upstairs at the Globe.
The epicenter of romantic jazz for the Saturday of this Valentine's Day weekend will be the UGA Chapel, an ideal venue for UGA Music's Mitos Andaya and her "Classic City Jazz," a gifted group of student vocalists (think Manhattan Transfer) and instrumentalists. Curtain at 8:00 p.m. $5 suggested donation, with proceeds going to the UGA/Athens Twilight Jazz Festival.
And on Sunday, they are BACK. Rand Lines, Dennis Baraw, and Carlton Owens grace the music corner at the Square One Fish Co. with cool, contemporary jazz to go along with um um good brunch. I'm planning to be there. Let's share a table! Noon to three.
The icing on the Valentine's cake? Sunday night at the Melting Point, Leslie Helpert reprises her tribute to Billie Holiday, backed by Trey Wright, Kevin Hyde, and Chris Enghauser. Showtime around 7 p.m. I gotta see this one.
